Imam Masjid Saman Persatuan Penduduk RM5 juta

KUALA LUMPUR: An imam has filed a RM5mil suit against the Taman Desa Kerinchi residents’ association and its chairman for defamation, following a letter to his superior describing him as “sombong” (arrogant).

Mohamad Afandi Che Harun, 33, named association chairman Mohd Anuar Idris and the association as defendants in his suit which was filed at the High Court Registry here at about 3pm on Tuesday.

He is seeking RM5mil in general damages, with interest, an order for the defendants to issue a public apology to him in writing, cost and other benefits deemed fit by the court.

Mohamad Afandi, who is the imam at the Al-Ikhlasiah Mosque at Bukit Kerinchi since Feb 1 last year, is also the Islamic Affairs officer at the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department (Jawi).

In his statement of claim, he said he had received on Jan 5 a copy of an undated letter signed by Mohd Anuar, addressed to Jawi director claiming that he was unfriendly, arrogant and had refused to attend social events including weddings and funerals organised by the residents.

He also claimed that the alleged defamatory letter, copies of which were sent to Lembah Pantai Umno division chief and the second defendant, implied that he had abused his power as imam and that he was problematic.

He claimed that the first defendant’s action had affected his reputation, image and good name, and has severely tarnished his credibility.

The imam also said he had on Jan 15 and Jan 26 requested that the defendants issue a public apology, but they had failed to do so.

Speaking to reporters later, Mohamad Afandi said he was filing the suit in his personal capacity.

He added that from March 1, he would be the imam at the Federal Territory Mosque, here.
