KEDAH BANK ON 592 ATHLETES FROM 26 EVENTS

ALOR STAR – Kedah will be banking on 592 athletes from 26 events to improve their gold medal haul in the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 which will be held on 10-19 June 2010.

Dr Hamdan Mohd Khalib, the State Sports Council chairman, who is also the Kedah Youth, Sports, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman, said that Kedah have targeted 35 gold medals at this year’s Sukan Malaysia.

“Our best performance was a 30-gold haul in 2006, and two years ago, we bagged 29,’’ said Dr Hamdan.

“The coaches, managers and council officials have conducted a thorough study on the capabilities of the athletes and concluded that Kedah should be able to reap at least 35 gold medals.

” For the Sukan Malaysia this time round, Kedah are paying special attention to weightlifting, cycling, athletics, pencak silat, wushu, boxing, silambam, lawn bowls, tenpin bowling and badminton.

And towards making sure that the contingent reach their target, Kedah have decided to pay RM3,500 to each of their gold medal winning athlete .

The cash incentive is RM500 more than what was offered for the previous Sukan Malaysia in Terengganu in 2008.

All selected athletes had undergone a systematic range of training sessions since early 2009 including weekend training camps since January.

The final centralised training will be held on 4-7 June at Universiti Utara Malaysia in Sintok with the flag handing over ceremony scheduled to be held on 8 June by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.
